為甚麼是鑽石?

Why diamonds?

Getting married means that you and your partner have decided to try to take care of each other throughout your life, and getting the other person's consent to propose is an important part. To successfully get your partner's approval, you need the right environment, the right moment, genuine sincerity, and a diamond engagement ring.

So why does an engagement ring have to be set with diamonds?

The Formation of Diamonds: Eternity

Ancient organic matter or carbon-rich minerals formed over hundreds of years deep in the Earth's mantle when they were subjected to tremendous pressures of up to 1 million pounds per square mile and temperatures in excess of 1,000 degrees Celsius.

After diamonds form deep within the Earth, volcanic eruptions in the Kimberley Tubes serve as conduits for lifting diamonds from the mantle to the surface. Many diamonds become part of alluvial deposits, transported by rivers or streams from their original source. Over time, flowing water wears away surrounding rocks and minerals, releasing diamonds and depositing them in river beds or sedimentary layers.

Mining natural diamonds is a very resource-intensive and time-consuming project. On average, each diamond requires the removal of ore equivalent to 200-400 million times its volume. After mining, it is sorted, cut, graded, and finally sold to customers.

The Structure of Diamonds: Indestructible

Materials with carbon content are subjected to astonishing pressure in the earth's mantle, which changes the carbon molecular structure and causes it to undergo a "polymorphism" process: a process in which carbon atoms rearrange themselves under high pressure and temperature to form a unique crystal structure.

The carbon atoms in diamond are arranged in a face-centered cubic lattice and are combined with four adjacent carbon atoms. It is the tenth level on the Mohs scale of hardness, the hardest known natural substance on earth, and is scratch- and abrasion-resistant.

Light and Diamonds: Shine Brilliantly

The three-dimensional lattice crystal structure in diamond produces its unparalleled hardness and refractive index, which is why it sparkles. When light enters a diamond and is reflected back to the human eye, it is equivalent to giving the diamond life.

Let’s learn more about the terminology used to distinguish the different optics on diamonds.

  • "Brilliance": All white light reflections inside and outside the diamond.
  • "Fire": When white light passes through diamonds, it disperses into rainbow-like spectral colors.
  • Scintillation: The light spots that appear when a diamond, person or light source moves.
  • "Light and Dark Pattern" Pattern: The contrast between light and dark areas is formed by the relative size, arrangement, and internal and external reflections of the diamond.

The Psychology of Diamonds: A Diamond is Forever

In the past, diamonds were treasures that could only be enjoyed by the royal family and aristocrats; in 1888, with the establishment of De Beers, the situation gradually became "civilian."

De Beers, who controlled 90% of the trading volume in the market at the time, wanted to stabilize prices and not hope that people who bought diamonds would return them. They came up with the idea of comparing hard diamonds to loyal love and strengthening the connection between diamonds and beautiful love. .

"A Diamond is Forever" & "A diamond is forever, a diamond will last forever"

I believe that even those who are not familiar with the history of diamonds have heard the above slogan.

De Beers' research shows that women's psychology towards luxury goods such as diamonds is ambivalent: they have a natural possessive desire for diamonds but believe that taking the initiative to ask for them will bring guilt of conscience. For this reason, De Beers once again used marketing techniques to resolve the problem, emphasizing that diamond rings should be combined with surprises: a man quietly buying a diamond ring and suddenly giving it away on a carefully arranged occasion can resolve women's ambivalence to the greatest extent. On the one hand, they are extremely surprised by having a diamond ring, and on the other hand, they can maintain the innocence of women.

Based on the above, through various natural and man-made factors, diamond rings have become a must-have for marriage proposals.
